What ALL CAPS means
ALL CAPS, also called uppercase or capital letters, writes every letter as a capital: meeting moved to friday becomes MEETING MOVED TO FRIDAY. Numbers, spaces and punctuation stay as they are.
How to use the ALL CAPS converter
Type or paste your text into the box above. The result appears underneath already in capitals. Press Copy to put it on your clipboard, or Download to save a text file. If you change your mind, the other buttons switch to lowercase, Title Case or a code style without retyping anything.
When ALL CAPS works, and when it does not
- Good for: short headings, labels, warning signs, form headings, acronyms and codes (
NASA,SKU-4471), and the occasional word you really want to stand out. - Poor for: paragraphs and emails. Long passages in capitals are slower to read because every word has the same outline, and in messages it usually reads as shouting.
- On a web page: if you only want the look, the CSS rule
text-transform: uppercaseshows text in capitals without changing the words stored on the page.
What the converter does to different text
| You type | ALL CAPS result |
|---|---|
hello world | HELLO WORLD |
order #42 shipped | ORDER #42 SHIPPED |
café au lait | CAFÉ AU LAIT |
straße | STRASSE |
i like it | I LIKE IT |
Two things are worth knowing. The German letter ß has no single-letter capital form in standard uppercasing, so it becomes SS. And the converter does not use any language-specific rules, so a Turkish dotted i becomes a plain I rather than İ.
ALL CAPS in other programs
- Word: select the text and press Shift+F3 to cycle through UPPERCASE, lowercase and Capitalise Each Word, or use the Change Case button on the Home tab.
- Excel and Google Sheets:
=UPPER(A1)returns the text in A1 in capitals. - Google Docs: Format > Text > Capitalization > UPPERCASE.
The converter is quicker when the text is in an email, a form, a chat or somewhere that has no menu for it. To go back, use the uppercase to lowercase converter, or fix ALL CAPS text that was typed with Caps Lock on.
