What alternating case is
Alternating case switches between lowercase and capital letters one letter at a time: this is fine becomes tHiS iS fInE. It is best known as the "mocking" text style, used online to repeat someone's words in a sarcastic voice.
How to use the generator
Type or paste a sentence into the box above. The result appears below, already alternating. Press Copy and paste it into a chat, a caption or a comment. The other buttons give you plain UPPERCASE, lowercase, sWaP cAsE or a code style if you change your mind.
How the pattern works
The converter counts only letters. The first letter is lowercase, the second a capital, the third lowercase again, and so on. Spaces, numbers and punctuation are left alone and do not use up a turn, so the pattern carries on across words.
| You type | Alternating result |
|---|---|
this is fine | tHiS iS fInE |
you said you would call | yOu SaId YoU wOuLd CaLl |
Order #42 shipped | oRdEr #42 ShIpPeD |
hello world | hElLo WoRlD |
Where people use it
- Sarcastic replies and memes, where the odd capitals suggest a mocking tone.
- Short captions and usernames, where the pattern looks decorative.
- Testing, where it is a quick way to see whether software treats uppercase and lowercase the same way.
Good to know
- It is hard to read. Keep it to a line or two. Long alternating text tires the eye and is difficult for screen reader users to follow.
- It is plain text. The result uses ordinary letters, so it pastes anywhere, unlike fancy fonts that depend on special symbols. For those, see our sister site Stylize My Text.
- It is not random. The pattern depends on where the letters fall. If you want a different look, change the text slightly or use toggle case.

- What is alternating case?

- It starts with lowercase, then alternates. So hello becomes hElLo.
- Do spaces and numbers count in the pattern?
- No. Only letters count, so the pattern carries on across spaces and punctuation.
- Will it paste into social media and chats?
- Yes. The result is plain text made of ordinary letters, so it pastes almost anywhere.
- Is my text stored?
- No. It is converted in your browser and not uploaded.
